MIDLOTHIAN, Va. – Christopher Ciesla said the biggest reason for his success at the Brine National Lacrosse Classic All-Star game Wednesday at the River City Sportsplex was simple: Just hustle.

Chris Ciesla (Centerville, OH)

Chris Ciesla (Centerville, OH)

“I just wanted to hustle as hard as I culdm” he said. “Knowing this was an All-Star game and coaches were watching, I figured the only thing they’ll notice is who is hustling.”

Ciesla, a 2018 attackman from Centerville High and Team Resolute in Ohio, scored twice for his 2018 National team in a 12-8 loss to the America All-Stars.

On making the All-Star Game: “It’s a great experience for me. I have always worked very hard and just to see it pay off is a great experience.”

On the event: “I loved everything about the tournament; it was so organized and the coaches know so much about the sport. So far I love the exposure.”

On his goal of playing college lacrosse: “I want to commit somewhere. It’s always been a dream of mine (to play college lacrosse) and to make that dream come true would be great.”

Other all-Stars that shined:

Seth Valestrand, 2016 ATT, Long Islamd (Bayport-Blue Point, LI Sting)

Seth Velestrand (Bayport-Blue Point, NY)

Seth Velestrand (Bayport-Blue Point, NY)

Valestrand had three goals (including one behind his back) and four assists to lead the the American All-Stars to a 16-5 rout of the National stars in the High School boys’ game.

His goals coming into the All-Star Game: “Just have fun and distribute the ball and win it. I was able to spot Kevin Rogers (Loudoun County, VA) and it was easy to get him some passes for goals.”

On the recruiting process: “I am pretty far along. I am getting looks from NESCAC schools, trying to get the best education possible and play lacrosse.”

On the event in general: “It was tough for Long island; we didn’t get the team results we were looking for. I didn’t expect to see so much talent from places like (eventual champion) Ohio and (semifinalist) Illinois. They are not from lacrosse hotbeds, but those teams were sick.”

“This event was a lot of fun. I usually don’t like playing in the heat; but playing two games a day was awesome because you could hustle as hard as you can. And the uniforms were sick.”

Ashley Go, 2018 MF, Virginia (James Madison, Cardinal)

Ashley Go (James Madison, VA)

Ashley Go (James Madison, VA)

Go scored three goals to lead the National All-Stars to a 9-7 win over the American stars in the 2018 girls’ game.

On the All-Star Game: “We didn’t know each other very well but the coach told us to slow it down and calm down and we took 1v1s, and trusted each other and we got going,”

On the tourney in general: Our teams is 0-4, but I just think I learned so much. just with the speed of the games. I usually played defense, but our coach gave me confidence playing offense at the midfield.”

On recruiting: “I don’t know; I am looking at low Division I schools.”

On what she learned: “I definitely learned from the other players and the skills they have.”

Maddie Major, 2017 MF, PA (Villa Joseph Marie, Tri-State)

Maddie Major (Villa Joseph Marie, PA)

Maddie Major (Villa Joseph Marie, PA)

Major scored twice to lad the National team to a 9-8 win over the American stars in the High School girls’ game and later had the game-winner to lead Pennsylvania to the team championship.

On her goal for the All-Star game: “Obviously, it’s a challenge playing with all kinds of people. We started slowly, but we picked it up and glued together more and worked off each other. And we came out with the win.”

On PA’s success: “We just learned to glue with each other; we have so much talent and I am really excited. Hopefully, that will bring us further.”

On recruiting: “I am right in the middle of the recruiting process. This summer has been big; I am getting more looks.”

Father Ryan High School (TN) 2016 midfielder Aaron Weisel has made a verbal commitment to play Division I lacrosse at Mount St. Mary’s University.

Aaron Weisel ledger:

Aaron Weisel

Aaron Weisel

High School: Father Ryan High School, TN

Graduation Year: 2016

Position: Midfield

College Choice: Mount St. Mary’s University

Club Affiliation: No Excuse Nashville

Lacrosse Honors: 1st Team All-Region Midfield, 2nd Team All-State Midfield

What will you major in/study? Theology/Secondary Education

Why did you choose the Mount? “I chose the Mount because of its strong Catholic identity, beautiful campus, and smaller size. It is a place in which I’m confident that I can grow spiritually, academically, and athletically. All the coaches were very welcoming and, more importantly, extremely knowledgeable about the game.”

Thoughts on your HS team’s season? “We graduate 9 seniors, 3 of which started, who will be hard to replace, including 1st Team All-State Midfielder Patrick Lynch, and we will only return 3 rising seniors from varsity players from last season. We had several sophomores step up big this year, and they will have to step up big again next year if we want to do well.”

Thank You: “I’d like to thank God for the abilities he has given me, for keeping me healthy, and for blessing me with the loving family that I am also very thankful for. Also, coaches Mosey, Puryear, Little, Harvery, and Scouten for the support.”

Other schools considered: Belmont Abbey, Seton Hill

Jeffrey Roberts

Coach Roberts boasts two decades of collegiate lacrosse coaching experience in NCAA Division I, II, and III programs. Roberts will be responsible for leading the Coppell high school boys lacrosse program (8-8 in 2015)

Roberts was most recently an assistant coach for Marquette University, an NCAA Division I lacrosse program, based in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Prior to his tenure at Marquette, he was the
founding head coach at Concordia Wisconsin University where he was responsible for program administration and management of this Division III program. While there, he as named 2012

“We’re excited to have someone of Coach Roberts’ caliber joining as our new varsity boys head coach. He brings us a wealth of coaching experience, a passion for teaching the game and a
proven ability to connect with his players,” stated high school program director, Greg Goyne. “He is an extremely respected, dedicated leader whose focus on player development is well known
throughout the college ranks. We couldn’t be more excited about his arrival.”

Roberts said, “I’d like to thank President Robin Barron and the entire search committee for this opportunity, I am excited about beginning this new challenge as Coppell’s varsity boys

Nancy and I are very excited to be part of the Coppell community.”

Roberts holds a Bachelors of Science from Springfield College in Massachusetts, and is currently working on his Masters in Coaching and Athletic Administration from Concordia University.

As Varsity boys head coach, Coach Roberts replaces Alex Poole, who resigned from the position to pursue other opportunities. The Coppell high school coaching staff also includes Matt

PLYMOUTH MEETING, Pa. – Nicholas Radford said he competed in Friday’s Liberty Bell Challenge individual showcase at Plymouth Whitemarsh to pursue his dream.

Nicholas Radford (Team Carolina)

Nicholas Radford (Team Carolina)

“Lacrosse is my passion and I hope to play at the next level so I came out here to pursue my dreams,” said the 2017 midfielder from Team Carolina and Charlotte Country Day.

Radford was one of 276 players in the classes of 2016-19 that participated in the kickoff event of the inaugural showcase weekend for the Passport Alliance before more than 50 college coaches. Twelve club programs will compete today and Sunday in a high school and youth-aged team tournament at Germantown Academy and Upper Dublin.

Radford also answered these questions:

How did you adjust to the competition?
Radford:
“Everybody has strengths; there are some good shooters and some good dodgers and you have to watch the competition and be on your toes.”

What did you learn from the event?
Radford:
“It’s really all about fundamentals. We don’t know each other and there are no plays so you have to get groundballs and get every pass. Every possession is an opportunity to score and may mean the difference in winning or losing.”

What are your college goals?
Radford:
“I am mainly looking at academics. I know a lot of kids a couple years above me who went D1 and they were really good players that never stepped on the field. I want to go somewhere where I can play and not be on the bench.”

Other players that shined Friday:

Nick Heiler (Duke's L.C.)

Nick Heiler (Duke’s L.C.)

Nick Heiler, 2017 FO/MF, Lansadale Catholic (PA), Duke’s L.C.

What were your goals for the event?
Heiler:
“I wanted to get looked out by some college coaches wanted and to win a lot of faceoffs. I did that happy; I was with my play.”

How did you adjust to the competition?
Heiler:
“It was really good all day and they challenged me to the end.”

What did you learn from the event (he had to take every faceoff for his team in each game)?
Heiler:
“I drank all day and kept hydrated and stayed in the shade when I could. I learned to keep on trying. I feel off a little, but kept on going.”

What are you college goals?

Adam Galovich (Duke's L.C.)

Adam Galovich (Duke’s L.C.)

Heiler:
“I just want a school that is interested in me.”

Adam Galovich, 2017 DEF, Seneca Valley (PA), Dukes L.C.

What were your goals for the event?
Galovich:
“I thought I did pretty well. I told some colleges that I would be here and I really came out trying to impress them and other colleges that may fit my future.”

How did you adjust to the competition?
Galovich: “the competition was really good; it was probably the best showcase I have ever been to. I had to play very smart since I had never played with any of these kids. I had to keep talking and to learn how everybody played.”

What did you learn from the event?
Galovich:
“Teamwork goes a long way. You come in here not having seen anyone before. Since everybody out here is a good player, you have to just play smart, play loud and play hard.”

What are your college goals?
Galovich:
“I want the school to be strong academically and I don’t want to go somewhere and not play until my junior or senior year.”

Garritt Schwarz, 2017 ATT, Maclay (FL), Rock Lacrosse-MD

Garrit (Rock Lacrosse)

Garrit Schwarz (Rock Lacrosse)

What were your goals for the event?
Schwarz:
“I wanted to get looked at by coaches and get to know a bunch of the guys.”

How did you adjust to the competition?
Schwarz:
“It was really good competition and lot of fun. At first we didn’t know each other that well but by the third game we knew each other and played a lot better. We had some good teamwork and became friendly with each other.”

What did you learn from the event?
Schwarz:
“You just got to play smart and not force as much. The game is a lot faster so I had to slow myself down.”

What are your college goals?
Schwarz:
“I am not sure yet so I am looking for whatever colleges are interested in me.”

Milo Navarro 2018 ATT, Academy Of The New Church (PA), Duke’s L.C/Bucks Select

Milo Navarro (Dukes L.C.)

Milo Navarro (Dukes L.C.)

What were your goals?
Navarro:
“I came in wanting to work hard and improve on the skills I have been focusing on all summer. I wanted to work on dodging down the alley and I felt I improved on that.”

How was the competition?
Navarro:
“There were some good players and you had to work with everyone. With the better players, I got to see what I had to work on the most.”

What did you learn about your game?
Navarro:
“I need to be more aggressive and dodge more often.”

What are your college goals?
Navarro:
“I’m looking for a good education first.”

Andrew Caples, 2018 DEF, McDonogh School (MD), Rock Lacrosse

What were your goals for the showcase?

Andrew Caples (Rock Lacrosse)

Andrew Caples (Rock Lacrosse)

Caples: “I wanted to come in today and go hard and hustle and show what I have. I wanted to work on my 1-on-1 plays and I think I did pretty well today.”

How was the competition?
Caples:
“The competition was really good and I always have a lot of fun playing with new guys and getting to know them. Over the first couple games you get to know people’s playing styles and you get to make some friends at the same time.”

What did you learn about your game?
Caples:
“Obviously, a lot of guys out here will probably be some of the better guys we’ll see this weekend. I kind of got a feel for the competition for the rest of the weekend.”

What are your college goals?
Caples:
“I am looking for a college where I can get a good education, maybe Ivy or Patriot League.”

FT. WASHINGTON, Pa. – The CT Chargers 2018 squad improved to 3-0 in pool play today with a 7-5 victory over Team Carolina as action heated up in the inaugural Liberty Bell Challenge at Germantown Academy.

Peter Ripperger (CT Chargers)

Peter Ripperger (CT Chargers)

The Duke’s Lacrosse Club (PA) also stayed perfect at 3-0 with a 14-1 rout of Team Long Island II. Last week the Dukes fell to Team Long Island I in the finals of the National 175 Best of the Best; this week Team LI I (3-0) also figures to contend for the title along with Sweet Lax (3-0).

The 12-team tournament of the Passport Alliance concludes tomorrow in all classes (2016-19) at Germantown Academy. A smaller youth tourney for the classes of 2020 to 2023 is also being played at nearby Upper Dublin.

The CT Chargers rallied from a 5-4 halftime deficit against Team Carolina as goalie Peter Ripperger (Brien McMahon High) did not allow a second-half goal. The Chargers also downed Evolve (Canada), 11-6, and Twist (PA), 9-2.

“We just want our defense to play strong and our face-off guys controlled it at the X,” said Ripperger. “I think we made a few adjustments and our face-off guys got us possession and we finished the goals.

“It’s good to go undefeated on the first day and go into the playoffs. I like the teams in the tournament and it’s good competition.”

Tanner Long (Duke's L.C.)

Tanner Long (Duke’s L.C.)

The Dukes also gained wins over Orange Crush (N.Y.), 8-4, and Evolve, 10-2.

“I think we’re really jelling together this weekend,” said Dukes defenseman Tanner Long (Germantown Academy). “Defensively, we play aggressively and offensively we were moving the ball around and finishing all our shots.”

Long said it was important to win a title in his hometown.

“It will definitely make a statement if we win this, to prove we are one of the top teams in the country,” he said., “We believe that and try to show that every day.

“It’s exciting. It’s our hometown tournament I guess, so we feel right at home.”

TABERNACLE, N.J. – Kristen Berntsen scored in overtime to give LaxEDGE (PA) an exciting 8-7 victory today over Hotlanta (GA) in the 2017 championship game of the Girls Summer Slam at Seneca High.

Lax Edge wins 2017 Summer Slam title

“That was intense,” said Berntsen (Central Bucks South), who scored on a close-in shot. “I was shaking. I was so nervous that I was going to be in that situation out of all of our attackers. I’m really glad it ended up the way it did. Obviously, everyone is happy, and so am I.”

Her goal also gave LaxEDGE its first championship.

“This was a great weekend for our girls,” said coach Tara Schumacher. “I felt like since the beginning of our club season, we’ve given 100 percent.

“There isn’t just one person on this team that is caring. It’s truly a team effort as to the success we had, especially this weekend.”

With about a minute and a half remaining, Haley Gorke gave Hotlanta a 7-6 lead. But with just seconds remaining, Lax Edge’s Allison Fellicetti scored to force overtime with the score at 7-7.

“That’s the beautiful thing about this team,” Schumacher said of Fellicetti’s goal. “They’re getting to know each other, and are able to create things with one another for the opportunities that we had today.”

Hotlanta – which traveled more than 14 hours to reach New Jersey – scored five straight goals to seize the 7-6 lead. Haley Gorke and Elizabeth Blumthal scored twice and Katherine Gross had the other goal.

“Shout out to them for coming this far,” Berntsen said. “They made a far journey, but this definitely feels very good.”

Defending national champions Long Island Yellow Jackets (N.Y.) and 3d Select National (Colo.) return to highlight the girls’ 28-team field and the boys’ 18-team field, respectively. It’s going to be an exciting few days.”

Players and coaches from the top three teams will receive medals. Lacrosse Magazine will name all-tournament teams. Admission to the event is free of charge.
