College Choice: Centenary College (LA)

Club Affiliation: Shreveport Mudbugs

Lacrosse Honors: Led team in points 2014 season

Why did you choose Centenary? “The educational opportunity at Centenary is top notch. When I went on my visit they told me they had a 100% acceptance rate into LSU Medical School and that was a big deal to me. The fact that I will be basically be set coming out of college really solidified my decision. I will also be getting an opportunity to play the sport that I love at the collegiate level. I am very excited for this opportunity.”

Outlook for 2015 HS season? “I look to lead my team back to the final four this season and bring home my schools first State championship.

“I also look forward to ending my high school career once again atop the team in points.”

Thank You: “I’d like to thank first of all my Savior Jesus Christ for blessing me with this opportunity. Also my family, coaches and my girlfriend for helping me with this tough decision. Thank you Drew Caldwell for never letting me give up and sticking with me.”

Other schools considered: Hendrix, ULL

From Press Release

Two hundred and forty-two of the Midwest’s best players are set to congregate at Detroit Country Day School in Michigan for the 2014 Can-Am Showcase on Saturday. Players in the 2015, 2016 and 2017 graduation years are represented on 12 teams, each coached by an NCAA Division I assistant coach. Every team plays three games and also participates in a skills clinic run by a college coach.

The top 40 players, as chosen by the Can-Am Showcase’s panel of evaluators, will cap the day by playing in the Showcase’s Select Game. Those not chosen to play in the Select Game have the option to attend a recruiting seminar led by University of Hartford head coach Peter Lawrence.canam-showcase-logo

Kettle Run High School (VA) 2015 attackman, Adam Donaldson, has made a commitment to play Division III lacrosse at Lynchburg College.

Adam Donaldson ledger:

Adam Donaldson

Adam Donaldson

High School: Kettle Run High School, VA

Graduation Year: 2015

Position: Attack

College Choice: Lynchburg College (ConnectLAX college profile)

Club Affiliation: Cavalier Lacrosse Club

Lacrosse Honors: Varsity captain, 4-year varsity starter, All-District team, Highest team shooting percentage (57%), district champions, Warrior Long Island Classic tournament, Brine National tournament, Roanoke College Winter Showcase All-Star, Philly Showcase tournament

What will you major in/study? Business or Communications

Why did you choose Lynchburg? “Coach (Steve) Koudelka was the main reason. He’s a fantastic coach and he really liked me as a student, as well as an athlete. Also, when I went down on my overnight visit the campus totally fit me and the guys on the team made me feel like one of them the second I got on campus. The fact that I have the chance to play for a nationally ranked team is not something very many kids get to do and it’s a true honor.”

Outlook for 2015 HS Season? “I feel that we should grow as a team and hopefully win another District title. I’m also looking to put together my best season statistically and win some more district honors. I want to make everyone around me better as well, because it takes a team to win.”

PLYMOUTH MEETING, Pa. – Zach Friedland said his West Coast Starz National Green 2018 squad may come from all regions west, but the squad has already become close.

“I thought we had a connection and great chemistry,” said the Torrey Pines (CA) attackman-midfielder after his team finished a 6-0 weekend at the Adrenaline Invitational at Plymouth Whitemarsh High. “We all like each other and we’re closely intertwined.

“It’s interesting. It would seem like we’re not able to play much together. But whenever we see each other at tournaments we hang out together and from doing these, we actually have all played together once or twice before before. It’s fun playing with one another.”

The Starz were one of 44 teams, of all classes, that competed before more than 100 coaches Saturday and Sunday.

2018 ATT/MF Zach Friedland, WC Starz green

2018 ATT/MF Zach Friedland, WC Starz Green/Torrey Pines, CA

“There’s a lot of great competition,” Friedland. “I am so excited and so happy our team did so well and performed so well on the East Coast with all these top teams.”

Friedland said he is not stressing about the college recruiting scene

“I am thinking about it a little bit. it’s starting to happen, but it’s sort of in the beginning for me. I have had a lot of contact with coaches and I think a lot (of others) are, too, but I am hearing to keep my options open, which sounds good to me. Whatever comes to me, I can decide after I get all my options.

“When we really play together and have fun and stay positive, it all works. If don’t worry about recruiting and just have fun, it will come to you.”

Others that excelled

McCabe Watson, 2018 ATT/MF, LB3, Ravenscroft, N.C.

How was the competition and what did you do to adjust to the level?
Watson:
“The competition was great and everybody played well. From all across the nation there’s a ton of talent and some different playing styles. You have to adjust defensively from teams up North to teams on the West Coast.”

2018 ATT/MF McCabe Watson, Ravenscroft, NC

2018 ATT/MF McCabe Watson, LB3/Ravenscroft, NC

Has your team played together much and how did the players adjust?
Watson:
“No we haven’t (played together much). There’s a couple Atlanta kids that played together a while. There are some kids from California and some from down South, like me, and other from Philly. We had to adjust to each other and play as a team.”

What type of college are you looking for?
Watson:
“I would like to go to one of bigger D1 schools or maybe the naval Academy. It starts with school. You have to have a growth mindset and do your work and when you get to the lacrosse field you always have to be working if you want to play at the top level. I just think everybody needs to play calm and not get nervous; play like you practice and always work hard and always know someone is watching you

Frankie Dillon, 2017 Goalie, NJ Riot, Pingry School, N.J.

2017 G Frankie Dillon, NJ Riot, Pingry School, NJ

2017 G Frankie Dillon, NJ Riot, Pingry School, NJ

You played every minute of the four wins in four games on Saturday. How did you handle the playing load?
Dillon:
“I managed pretty well; it was fun playing the whole game. Sometimes in the second half it got a little tough, but that was more mentally than physically taxing. My voice got horse after the first game.”

What skills do you have to offer a college program?
Dillon:
“I am really good at clearing. I think I am an athletic goalie, which is hard to find. I can take it, and run it to midfield. I am not one of those guys to just go and shoot. I am very good on clears and very good low. If you shoot on the ground, most of time I am going to get. I am very vocal and not afraid to yell at people and kick them on the butt, but I always say, ‘Good job’ and I am always positive.”

What type of college are you looking for?
Dillon:
“Some place definitely with good academics. In the end it’s not about lacrosse, it’s about getting into the right school for you.

Why has your team enjoyed success?
Dillon:
“It’s a lot of fun to play on the Riot and great how we stay together all four years. We create team chemistry and that helps a lot.”

Dylan Wolf, 2017 Midfielder, Rock 2017, Fallston, MD (helped HS team will state title as a freshman starter)

2017 ATT Dylan Wolf, Rock, Fallston, MD

2017 ATT Dylan Wolf, Rock, Fallston, MD

How have you adapted to the level of play in the tournament?
Wolf:
“It’s been challenging trying to become a team since it’s my first year with the program and it’s our first tournament. That will come as we get our offense together and get more familiar with each player’s strengths.”

What do you have to offer a college program?
Wolf:
“I just play my hardest and give everything I have got. If you give everything you’ve got, coaches see you and your coaches are proud of you. I go 100 percent on groundballs and I hustle.”

What type of college are you looking for?
Wolf:
“I haven’t really thought about it. I want a good environment, good academics and a school that will help me in the future. I want to take my time and I don’t want to commit early; I want to find a school that suits me.”

Bobby McClure, 2016 ATT, HEADstrong LC, Haverford High, PA

2016 ATT Bobby McClure, HEADstrong LC, Haverford High, PA

2016 ATT Bobby McClure, HEADstrong LC, Haverford High, PA

What has the competition been?
McClure:
It’s been really competitive. It’s helped to see kids from California and how they play. We’ve done alright and should have done better. But playing these kind of teams is different.”

Wat type of college are you looking for?
McClure:
“I was looking to go D3; definitely a big college with good lacrosse and good academics and somewhere in the field of sports medicine.”

What do you have to offer a college program?
McClure:
“I would say my vision from behind the net and ability to pick apart a defense.”

What can you take from this tourney?
McClure:
“To be a little smarter with skip passes and don’t be lackadaisical and pick the right ones. You can make a great play or you could mess up a play and throw it away.”

The Stik: A tool for lacrosse players to build strength, flexibility in the arms, hands, wrist and grip

A potent training device created to help athletes – especially lacrosse players – build strength, flexibility and elasticity in the arms, hands, wrist and grip has been re-introduced to the public.

Jay Dyer demonstrates the Stik

Jay Dyer demonstrates the Stik

The Stik, moderately priced in three different models, has been endorsed by a Hall of Fame high school lacrosse coach as well as Jim McCrossin, the highly-regarded trainer and strength and conditioning coach for the Philadelphia Flyers. The Stik has being used regularly by Flyers superstar Claude Giroux and two-time Stanley Cup champion Mike Richards, and according to McCrossin, has helped them improve their game.

John Nostrant, coach of the undefeated 2011 national champion Haverford School (PA) boys’ lacrosse team, has endorsed it. So has Villanova assistant coach Brian Samson, whose recently guided Conestoga to three straight Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic Association championships and reached the state finals in five of the past six years. One of Samson’s former players, 2014 Conestoga grad Christian Jobs, credited the Stik for helping him become an all-league face-off specialist.

Recently, renowned Johns Hopkins Strength and Conditioning coach Jay Dyer also became an endorser of The Stik. Dyer has been using The Stik with lacrosse players and with clients in his private business as a key part of his conditioning program. Dyer said boys and girls especially at the high school and college ages can benefit by using the Stik, which also has been used extensively for rehabilitation purposes.

Using The Stik for only minutes a day could help lacrosse players build strength in their forearms, upper arms, hands and wrist to improve the speed of their shot, fend off players, improve their strength at the face-off X, tighten their cradle and strengthen their check.

To learn more about the Stik or place an order, click here to access thestik.com. For instructional videos using the Stik, click here.

The Stik is available in three models. The 1-lb version is used for rehabilitation and the 3- and 5-lb models are used for training. You can use the Stik while watching TV, listening to music or even sitting on the bench during a game. The Stik is also easily adjustable and users can change the rate of tension for many different exercises.

F6r0er Conestoga senior face-off specialist Christian credits the Stik, a training tool, for helping him improve his game

“I look at some sports – in particular, lacrosse, baseball and golf – and those athletes rely a lot on their forearms and wrist and hand strength,” said Dyer. “It not only challenges the athlete from a strength standpoint, but it’s a piece of the puzzle in helping them develop as an athlete

“Everything you do in lacrosse is full body movement. You need strength and power throughout the entire body in order to do these movements. When it comes down to it, the final piece of the chain is your hands. They have to be strong whether you think of them as the starting point or end point.

“We have specific days we have our athletes doing forearm and grip work as part of their program. We feel it’s an important piece of developing your strength and developing as an athlete.”

Dyer said the Stik is also convenient and easy to use, adjust and carry, making it a valuable piece of any strength and conditioning program.

“It’s easy to use in regards to increasing or decreasing the tension pretty quickly,” he said. “You can pass it from one athlete to another based on their abilities as opposed to one of the old school lacrosse shafts with rope on it.

“You can have two athletes working at the same time. It’s pretty convenient because you can pass it on to the next guy and have them make adjustments.”

Editor’s note: This is the first of three stories this week detailing how the Stik can become a part of a strength and conditioning program for lacrosse players. The second story will appear Wednesday.

Former Conestoga (PA) face-off specialist Christian Jobs said the Stik helped him become an All-Central League performer.

Former Conestoga (PA) standout Christian Jobs demonstrates using the Stik to improve hand, wrist,, forearm strength

“It helped me because it made my forearms stronger and gave me a quicker reaction off the whistle,” said Jobs. “I even felt sometimes I could overpower the other guy.”

The Stik – moderately priced in three different models – is used as a training tool to build strength, flexibility and elasticity in the arms, hands, wrist and grip through a series of exercises that can be done anywhere. Jobs liked the mobility of using the Stik. It can easily fit in his bag to carry to a game or a training session and he could use it when watching TV or just hanging out.

“For some of the bigger games I pumped up my forearms before a face-off to get that extra edge,” Jobs said.

“I would recommend it,” he added, saying he could see it helping players at any position because it addresses so many areas of the game. “I carry it in my bag. I use it in my room when watching TV and actually before some games. Even sometimes I would use it 30 seconds before a before a face-off to get the extra pump.”

Johns Hopkins University strength and conditioning coach

Johns Hopkins University strength and conditioning coach Jay Dyer endorses the Stik as a tool to enhance a full strength program

The Stik is available in three models. The 1-lb version is used for rehabilitation and the 3- and 5-lb models are used for training. For more information on the Stik, including testimonials, instructions and directions, frequently asked questions and instructional videos, click here.

John Nostrant, a former pro player for the Philadelphia Wings and standout at Washington College, said when he played he used an antiquated system to strengthen his arms and hands. Now he is happy to have the devices in his locker room where he coaches a national power at The Haverford School (PA).

“This device comes full circle,” he said. “It’s a great piece of equipment; you can set it to small tension for rehabilitation, or harder tension, depending on your needs. It helps the user snap their wrist to get a harder shot and it helps improve stick work.”

Nostrant, who is a member of the Eastern Pennsylvania chapter of the US Lacrosse Hall of Fame, said the device can help players recover quicker and prevent injuries.

“I think another bonus is that it gives the player a little more confidence,” he said.

Recently, renowned Johns Hopkins Strength and Conditioning coach Jay Dyer also became an endorser of The Stik. Dyer has been using The Stik with lacrosse players and with clients in his private business as a key part of his conditioning program.”

“Our goal is to make sure their forearm strength keeps up with the rest of the body,” said Dyer. “Part of it with those athletes is the mental component. They are not going to feel as successful if they don’t have strong wrists, strong hands and strong forearms.

Dyer said that Hopkins lacrosse players and others often talk about the physical lift they get from using the Stik.

“The burn effect is a love-hate relationship,” he said.

“I just think part of your edge as an athlete is having the steadfast belief that you’re not only more than the other guy, but doing it better than the next guy. You want that final piece that gives you the edge.”

Unfortunately, due to the forecasted temperatures and the threat of frost, the grass surface at Citizens Bank Park cannot be used for lacrosse games Friday night.Charity Showdown

The 2014 Philly Charity Showdown will be held nearby at the South Philadelphia Athletic Field at 10th and Bigler Streets. This is right across I-76 from the ballpark (see graphic). Additionally there is plenty of space at the Stadium to warm up. Players should arrive dressed in their lacrosse uniforms and gear.

Despite the change in playing surface, the cause of the event has not changed. NXTsports has been working hard on this event for more than six months and remain on track to raise over $30,000 to support the Thomas Jefferson University Foundation’s Comprehensive Concussion Center. Accordingly, NXTsports still plans to donate all net ticket proceeds to the Jefferson Hospital Concussion Center. If any advance ticket buyers, though, wish to request a refund due to this development, NXTsports will honor those requests and will begin processing them within a week.

Click here for more info on the event and a link to purchase tickets.

Philly Charity Showdown Schedule
5 p.m. – Seventh grade Pennsylvania All-Stars vs. New Jersey All-Stars.
5:50 p.m. – Eighth grade Pennsylvania All-Stars vs. New Jersey All-Stars.
6:40 p.m. – Episcopal Academy (PA) vs. St. Augustine Prep (NJ)
