NEWTOWN SQUARE, Pa. – Conestoga (PA) 2016 LSM Sam Bouhdery said he never expected to named the MVP (high point scorer) at Saturday’s Philly Showcase.

Conestoga 2016 LSM Sam Bouhdary (NXT)

Conestoga 2016 MVP and LSM Sam Bouhdary (NXT)

“I was definitely surprised,” said Bouhdery. “I came in here just to work my hardest and fly 110 percent, and I did that. I have been training really hard in the off-season and it showed here. I flew on the field when the play went upfield and I think my transition (play) helped.”

Bouhdery was one of many Fab 40 All-Stars that shined at Episcopal Academy as more than 120 coaches flocked to see the nation’s elite 2016 and 2017 players. This is the first of several articles highlighting Fab 40 All-Stars.

Sam Bouhdery, Conestoga (PA), 2016 LSM, NXT LC

How was the level of competition and how did you adjust your game?
Bouhdery:
“It was more than I expected, to be honest. The competition was great. I have played with some of these guys at various events and some are from my club team, so I’s great to play with them again.”

What type of college are you looking for and what do you have to offer a college program?
Bouhdery:
“I am looking to play college lacrosse, but I am looking more for academics and location and than lacrosse. I kind of want to go out west; that’s my preference. Academically, my grades are going well and, athletically, I think I can bring a certain speed and transition to a college program. I can get the ball down with my stick pretty quickly. ”

What did you learn that you can take with you into the spring season?
Bouhdery:
“Definitely to go 110 percent. Obviously, you are going to make mistakes, but if you’re going 110 percent it doesn’t matter.”

Trinity Pawling 2016 LSM Tanner Baldin (Edge)

Trinity Pawling 2016 LSM Tanner Baldin (Edge)

Tanner Baldin, Trinity Pawling (NY), from Ontario, 2016 LSM, Edge Lacrosse

How was the level of competition and how did you adjust your game?
Baldin:
“It’s a lot different than what I am used to, coming down here. I have never been to a big, big event like this. It’s really tough; every single kid can play and if you let down for a minute the ball is in the back of the net. I knew it was a big event; the Philly Showcase is always a big event. I wanted to go out there and work hard and whatever happens, happens. There’s tons of good kid with the same goals. It’s a lot of fun. Obviously, I did something right to make it to the All-Star Game.”

What adjustments do you need to make to play against American players?
Baldin:
“I haven’t really played the American game a lot down here. With my box (experience), it’s easy to push the ball. I feel like I have the advantage over some, but in other ways I am not used to dodge and re-dodge, so I am getting used to that.”

What type of college are you looking for and what do you have to offer a college program?
Baldin:
“I think I am going into civil engineering, so that kind of narrows down my choices. I am looking to go D1 and whoever has (may major) to offer is something to look at. I think every school needs a Canadian because of our box (background). We can push the ball. I like to press out between the lines, I am tenacious between the lines.”

What did you learn that you can take with you into the spring season?
Baldin:
“I learned there’s a lot of kids competing and if you do get a spot in a college program, be grateful for it.”

Matt Cameron, Blue Ridge School (VA), of British Columbia, 2017 MF, Seattle Starz

Blue Ridge School (VA) 2017 MF Matt Cameron (Seattle Starz)

Blue Ridge School (VA) 2017 MF Matt Cameron (Seattle Starz)

What were your goals and did you feel you reached them?
Cameron:
“I just felt like I wanted to play the best I could play and if someone saw and thinks I could be good enough to play at their school, that would be great. I feel like I did that; I made the Fab 40 All-Star game so I feel I met my goal.”

How was the level of competition and how did you adjust your game?
Cameron:
“It was really different. Back home we play one handed – in box – and down here they are dodging two hands and going down the alley. It wasn’t too hard an adjustment, and I felt i played well.”

What type of college are you looking for and what do you have to offer a college program?
Cameron:
“I am really into history and any school that has that major is good, but I feel I am a good middie, smart, I move the ball and play good D so I think I will be alright.”

What did you learn that you can take with you into the spring season?
Cameron:
“I need two hands!”

Northport (NY) 2017 MF Ryan Magnuson (Team 91)

Northport (NY) 2017 MF Ryan Magnuson (Team 91)

Ryan Magnuson, Northport (N.Y.), 2017 MF Team 91

What were your goals and did you feel you reached them?
Magnuson:
“I just wanted to come here and play my best and make the All-Star team. I had two goals so I was proud of myself. I’d say my dad’s motivation helped, me a lot. My coach helped and my team was good.”

How was the level of competition and how did you adjust your game?
Magnuson:
“It was the best competition I have seen so far. We all go to showcases and know each other. Players like us mesh well since we know how to play the game.”

What type of college are you looking for and what do you have to offer a college program?
Magnuson:
“The college that wants me there and wants me to play there. I think I’m a good offensive middie that uses both hands; I dodge and I can can score.”

What did you learn that you can take with you into the spring season?
Magnuson:
“Just keep playing hard no matter what!”

Christian Blackwell, Patrick Henry (VA), 2016 MF, Virginia Elite

Patrick Henry 2016 MF ChristianBlackwell (Virginia Elite)

Patrick Henry (VA) 2016 MF ChristianBlackwell (Virginia Elite)

How was the level of competition and how did you adjust your game?
Blackwell:
“Everyone here plays two-handed and they move off the ball a lot better than most kids in high school. I had to adjust to that and make sure I was moving a lot more on offense and, defensively, if you move your head and you’re not looking at your guy you’re going to get beat. In the transition game, you can lose your man easily.”

What were your goals and did you feel you reached them?
Blackwell:
“My main purpose coming here as a junior was to exercise all my options and have some colleges that hadn’t seen me before get a chance to come look at me. I think I did a really good job and I played the best I could; I am happy with how I played.”

What did you learn that you can take with you into the spring season?
Blackwell:
“I’d say I need to be a little more two-handed. I have worked on my left a lot, but I need to be able to rip it more. I need to understand when to take shots and when to hit guys, and understand slide patterns a little more from crease poles and when to hit guys (with a pass).”

What type of college are you looking for and what do you have to offer a college program?
Blackwell:
“I’ve visited Hampden Sydney and I am interested in a couple smaller D3 schools, and I talked to some D1s and on lower end of the spectrum some club teams. My goals is to find a school I love and if they happen to have lacrosse, go after it whole heartedly. I would never go to school just to play lacrosse; you could get injured or burned out.

“If I end up participating in collegiate lacrosse at any level, I would hope to bring good decision-making and field recognition to a team. A huge part of lacrosse is just knowing where your teammates will be, and when to get them the ball. If you can recognize what a defense is giving you, then you really have great opportunities to exploit their mistakes. I would definitely do my best to bring a high IQ to a team. However, I still have a lot of learning to do.”

NEWTOWN SQUARE, Pa. – LB3 Atlanta’s Reed Bagwell said the weekend trip North for the Philly Showcase was a rousing success.

Bagwell, a 2016 midfielder, saw his team win Friday night at the Charity Showdown and then go 2-0-1 Sunday at the Philly Invitational, capped off by a victory over Phillie Elite-LB3.

Reed Bagwell, 2016 MF, LB3ATL, West Forsyth, GA

Reed Bagwell, 2016 MF, LB3ATL, West Forsyth, GA

“We came up here expecting to hang with (the competition) and didn’t know if we could come out on top, being from Atlanta,” said Bagwell, who attends West Forsyth (GA). “Beating a Philly team is awesome.”

Bagwell noted that LB3 Atlanta is coached by Liam Banks, whose father, John “Old Man” Banks was co-coach for Phillie Elite.
“He was talking all week some smack about how he was going to beat us,” Bagwell said with a laugh.

On Friday LB3 edged Philly’s Freedom Lacrosse, 4-3, in a tight defensive game as LB3 competed in the Charity Showdown for the second straight year. “Friday went real well,” Bagwell said. “Our team passed the ball real well. We didn’t get the ball much for low possessions, but when we did we made it count.”

“Today we definitely showed we could play as a team more assists than self-made goals; and our groundballs were good.”

Bagwell said the team competition was strong.

“They’re all real good,” he said. “But we can definitely hang with any team up here.”

What did he learn from the event? Just how to play as a team and be smarter and make my shots count.”

Improve your game: Using the Stik can improve strength and flexibility in the arms, hands, wrist, grip

Editor’s Note: This is the third story on the Stik, a tool recently re-released to the public that can be used as part of a strength and training program to improve an athlete’s strength in the forearm, wrist, hands and grip. Click here for the first article; click here for second article.

As the highly-recognized Philadelphia Flyers’ head trainer and strength and conditioning coach, Jim McCrossin has worked with some of the world’s elite hockey players.

McCrossin has used many training tools and equipment in his career. One he recommends highly is The Stik, a training device that strengthens the arms, wrist, hands and grip and recently was re-introduced to the public.

Former Flyer goalie Brian Boucher is seen here using the Stik

Former Flyer goalie Brian Boucher is seen here using the Stik

The Stik – available in three sizes at prices of $39.95, $49.95 and $59.95 – is easy to use in any location and convenient to carry. It has been a regular training tool for the Flyers and now is being employed by more and more lacrosse players as well as other athletes that rely on the use of a stick, club, racquet or other piece of equipment in their hands.

McCrossin has used the Stik with Flyers such as Claude Giroux and Mike Richards (now a two-time Stanley Cup champion with the Los Angeles Kings) for rehab and training purposes.

McCrossin said he and former strength and conditioning guru and Philadelphia Sixers President Pat Croce, considered one of the leading rehabilitation experts in the field years ago, recommended The Stik for their clients in over 40 rehab/training locations. Now, McCrossin has seen so much value by using The Stik he has become a partner in the company.

McCrossin believes the Stik can help lacrosse players build strength to improve the speed and of their shot, fend off players, improve their strength at the face-off X, tighten their cradle and strengthen their check.

The Stik is also being used for rehabilitation for high school athletes, and for people of all ages. Click here to go to Thestik.com to learn more about this product.

“We utilized it in 40 locations in 11 states for physical therapy,” said McCrossin. “People used it for anything from elbows to finger tips in rehabilitation. So I was happy when (Stik owner) Buck (Boettger) came to me with the (upgraded) Stik.

“Ice hockey is a lot like lacrosse. You are holding a stick in your hands and there is not much difference in the snap of a snapshot to our wristshot in our sport. It is a part of our team’s conditioning and they like to take it on the road for because it is so accessible.”

McCrossin said many Flyers have regularly used The Stik as rehabilitation tools for hand injuries in the past few years.

“You Look at your body as a whole; you have to condition the entire body,” McCrossin said. “Hockey or lacrosse players are not very different with the forearms that snap the shot.

“Everything transpires through the core, but the final snap uses the wrist and extensions such as the flexors. There is no better way to do it than through The Stik. And it’s not like heavy dumbbells; you can put it into your bag.”

McCrossin said The Stik is ideal for a high school lacrosse player trying to gain strength.

“Your grip strength and muscles, such as those in the forearm are essential to hockey and lacrosse,” McCrossin said. “These sports are similar.

“I do believe the majority of velocity comes from the core, but the final phase are from the wrist, hands and how strong the wrist flexors are. I think hand and forearm strength are much overlooked conditioning areas for the wrist shot.”

“This is the type of device that helps you get to the next level.”

McCrossin said that the forearms and wrist often are underdeveloped by youngsters who focus most on building their chest and bench pressing.

“I hate to say it, but a lot of players in any sport train for the beach,” he said. “They want to look good and they don’t always train to perform well.

“The Stik helps reduce risk of injury. I believe that strengthening and creating endurance is important. When you have muscle fatigue, you are more likely to get injured. Training with it can really minimize injury to the wrist and elbow.”

McCrossin believes strengthening the arms, wrist and hands should be part of any training program for an athlete that uses a stick.

“Training the body as a whole to play sports is essential,” he said. “So many studies correlate good strength and overall conditioning to success.”

One of the best parts of the Stik is how easy it is to use and adjust levels of resistance, and how light it is to take anywhere and use anywhere.

“With the Stik, two or three people can utilize it at one time and you can just throw it in your bag and bring it to the rink,” said McCrossin. “No matter what sport you play, we are creatures of habit and if they can work out on their own and stay out of the medical room it makes my job that much easier.”

What will you major in/study? Business

Why did you choose Mercer? “Mercer began recruiting me my sophomore year. I went to a prospect camp at Mercer and played really well and they invited me to come on a visit. During my visit I loved the atmosphere of the small school, the players that I met on the team, the coaching staff, and the academics. I can’t wait to be a Bear!”

Outlook for 2015 HS season? “Last year we completed our goal of going 500 on the season. This year with more games and harder teams on our schedule we look to improve skill-wise and meet the same criteria.”

Thank You: “I would like to thank my high school coach Austin Ricci as well as Brian Davis and Mike VK. Thank you to all the Team Florida coaches and staff most notably Mark Ayad and Tom West. Last but not least my parents, friends, and family who helped me achieve my goals.”

Other schools considered: University of Tampa, Jacksonville University, High Point University

In the U19 division, it was a perfect ending to the IMG Academy National Team’s fall schedule, which peated as U19 national champions and capped off a 17-0 record through three fall tournaments. The last team that stood between IMG Academy and a second straight IMG Nationals title was Team Louisiana of New Orleans, La.. Team Louisiana earned the #2 seed after a solid 2-1 record in pool play, and made an impressive run through the championship rounds, but was overwhelmed by IMG Academy 26-1 in the final. Notably, the IMG Academy National team outscored opponents by a combined margin of 110-14 in seven total games (qualifying and tournament play).

In the U17 division, the IMG Academy Varsity team added another title to the program’s trophy case after an impressive showing of its own. The Varsity team, coming off a 3-3 performance at the UpLax Tournament in Maryland earlier this month, bounced back with a perfect 6-0 record, outscoring opponents by a combined margin of 63-11. The Varsity squad earned a first round bye in the championship tournament, and turned up the heat in the final rounds on defense, only allowing a pair of goals through two games. In the final, IMG Academy Varsity upended the Bay Area Sand Sharks of Tampa, Fla. by a score of 9-1. The title marked the Varsity team’s first IMG Nationals title.

The U15 division came down to a battle between the Texas United, comprised of players from Dallas, Austin, Houston and everywhere in between, and the Lake Norman United Middle School Boys from Mooresville, N.C. Texas United got off to a strong start in pool play with a 3-0 record, entering the championship bracket with a bye as the #1 seed. Lake Norman, meanwhile, entered Sunday’s competition as the #3 seed after a 2-1 showing in pool play. In the final, Lake Norman gave Texas its strongest challenge of the weekend, but Texas held strong to earn the U15 national title by a narrow 5-4 margin. It was the first appearance by both clubs at the IMG Nationals.

Rounding out the competition was the U13 division was an all-Long Island, N.Y. matchup between Lax Army and Team Long Island. The Long Island clubs were the highest scoring in the U13 division throughout the weekend, with Team Long Island recording an impressive 61 goals through six games, with Lax Army right on their heels with 45 goals of their own on the weekend. The two met in pool play on Saturday, with Long Island coming out on top by a narrow 4-5 margin, and when the two met again in the final, it would be Long Island coming out on top once more by a score of 9-5.

For all the participating teams, it was an opportunity to play in front of college coaches from many of the top programs in the nation like Albany, Georgetown, Rutgers, Loyola and many others seeking out the next generation of collegiate lacrosse stars. Texas United and Team Long Island, in addition to earning national championships, were awarded a free week of camp at IMG Academy.

2014 IMG Nationals also featured the introduction of the U13 division. Last year’s champions were IMG Academy (U19), Six Nations Thunder Tribe (U17) and Atlanta Crush (U15).

DOWNINGTOWN, Pa. – Oliver Hollo admitted he was a little intimidated when she stepped onto the field for his first game Saturday at the Philly Freshman Showcase at United Sports.

But quickly his abilities took over.

“I was a little hesitant, obviously, coming into the Philly Freshman Showcase,” said the 2018 LSM from Deerfield Academy (MA) and Patriot Lacrosse. “This is most likely the biggest showcase in the fall.

“The competition was incredible. I was a little reluctant to put it all out there, but once I stepped on the field I realized it was going to be a little easier.”

Hollo indeed “put it all out there” as he was named the Morning Session MVP and earned a spot in the Fab 40 All-Star game. He was one of many that shined Saturday as more than 75 coaches – including one or more nearly every Top 20 team – attended the fall’s premier showcase, hosted by NXT’s Showcase Lacrosse.

The Morning Session runner-up to MVP was Governor’s Academy (MA) attackman Zach Ludd (NH Tomahawks) while Westlake (TX) midfielder Tate Young (LI Express) was the second runner-up.

Hollo said the competition will help prepare him for high school lacrosse: “I learned about being as selfless as possible; that helps you when you move up to high school,” he said. “You have to pick your shots well and know when to take shots. Passing and transition is key. We had a few goals in our first game from transition and that helped us pull out the game.”

What type of college is Hollo looking for? “I am very open minded,” he said. “I am not set on one school. I have my goals; of course, it’s just freshman year and I am just starting out. It’s going to be a challenging four years.”

How was the competition and what did you do to match the level
Ludd:
“There was a very high level of competition on Saturday. I had to give all I had in every part of my game like dodging, cutting and riding.”

What did you learn that you can take to the spring season?
Ludd:
“I learned that my quickness and vision will help me a lot for this upcoming spring season.”

What went well for you?
Ludd:
“I thought that I was able to see the field very well in the morning. My teammates worked well off ball for me and weren’t ball hogs.”

What type of college are you looking for?
Ludd:
“I want to attend a college with a lot to offer academically. I don’t quite know what I want to study yet, so a college with a lot to offer would be great. Athletically, I want to go somewhere where I have a chance to win a national championship and (where the school) also has other successful sports like football or basketball.”

Westlake (TX) midfielder Tate Young (LI Express), Second MVP Runner-up

Westlake (TX) ATT Tate Young (LI Express)

Westlake (TX) ATT Tate Young (LI Express)

What goals did you have coming in?
Young:
“First of all, I wanted to come out here and not think about the coaches. I wanted to play my own game and have some fun. It’s the last showcase of the fall.”

How was the competition and what did you need to do to adjust?
Young:
“It was some of the best kids in the nation; it’s the most elite showcase of them all. It’s a lot quicker; everything is quicker.”

What type of college are you looking for and what are your strengths?
Young:
“I m not sure yet; I am talking to a few. I’m a good north and south dodger. From up top I can feed and I can get my hands up and help score goals and get assists.”

St. Anne’s Belfield (VA) ATTJjavon Johnson (Duke’s LC)

How was the competuition and what did you do to adjust to the level?
Johnson:
“It was really good competition. You have to get your own. It’s a great event. To adjust you have got to let the game come to you. With good defenders, you sort of have to play your own game and see how it works out.”

What did you learn about your game to take to the high school season?
Johnson:
“I definitely need some improvement with all this great talent. It makes you want to get a lot better.”

What type of college are you looking for?
Johnson:
“I am looking for great academics and you always want some good lacrosse. There are a lot of good options; you just have to find the right one.”

North Gwinett (GA) ATT Jack Ortolano, LB3 Atlanta

North Gwinnett (GA) ATT Jack Ortolano (LB3 Atlanta)

North Gwinnett (GA) ATT Jack Ortolano (LB3 Atlanta)

How was the competition and how did you adjust?
Oertolano:
“I definitely had to play a lot faster than I normally do. And I had to limit my mistakes; I think I played pretty well.”

What did you learn about your game that you can take to the high school season?
Ortolano:
“I have to be confident; that helps me a lot. I just think I can play with anybody in the country and if I play like that, I think I’ll do pretty well. But I definitely have to work on stuff; my feeding … this was an awesome experience.”

What type of college are you looking for?
Ortolano:
“Academically, I am looking for a well rounded school and lacrosse-wise, I’d love to go to an ACC school. At the beginning I felt pressure that I wasn’t going to get noticed. Then I realized not everyone is going to be recruited as a freshman. But now I came up here and played well so hopefully I get something out of this.”

Fab 40 All-Star stats: Shahe Katchadurian (John Jay-NY, Prime Time) had 10 saves on 14 shots in the first half for the Orange team in a 10-7 loss. Chris Brandau (Boys’ Latin-MD, Breakers) had five saves on seven shots for the Green team. MF Kevin Hussy (Smithtrown East-NY) scored twice for the Orange while Nicky Solomon (Centennial-GA, LB3 ATL, UNC commit) had two goals and Ross Pridemore (Taft School-CT, Sweetlax, UVA commit) had a goal and an assist.
