From Press Release

The Liberty Bell Challenge Showcase/tournament is set for its inaugural event and many are already considering it one of the most competitive events of the summer recruiting window.

The Passport Alliance is focused on introducing a series of high-end boutique individual and club team showcases and the Liberty Bell Challenge will set the bar very high.

The Liberty Bell Challenge is set for July 11-12th as the inaugural club team showcase. bringing together a top level, competitive group of clubs to the Philly area.

The Liberty Bell Challenge club team showcase is the first in a series of highly selective college recruiting showcases that will be raising the bar. The Liberty Bell will be assembling only 12 TOP LEVEL clubs stretching from North Carolina to Canada and being held at the state-of-the art Germantown Academy athletic facility in Suburban Philadelphia.

The Passport Alliance is excited to be sponsoring this event in the highly competitive Philly lacrosse hotbed that will allow both clubs and individuals to showcase their skills against other highly skilled players in a highly productive and dynamic recruiting event.

In order to provide all strong players seeking to compete at the college level an opportunity to gain further exposure to the expected large volume of college coaches, the Passport Alliance and the Liberty Bell Challenge is also launching an individual showcase on Friday, July 10th prior to the Club team showcase. The organizers of the Passport Alliance realize that many gifted players not attending the Liberty Bell Club event also deserve an opportunity to be showcased so the individual event is open to all strong players to apply while position spots are open. With over 100 college coaches expected to attend, this is surely an event not to miss.

“The Dukes are participating in this showcase as we only play in events that attract the most competitive and top level teams AND that attract interest from the leading college coaches. I believe this will be THE EVENT on the second weekend of July that everyone will want to be at.” – Ebe Helm – Dukes Lacrosse Club Founder/President

“When Twist was asked to consider this event, we immediately were excited about the level of competition, the awesome venue and the draw that this event would have with the college recruiters. It was an easy conclusion that the Liberty Bell Challenge will give our players the best chance to be seen in quality games and to get on the radar with the types college programs our players are seeking.” – Greg Flego – Twist Founder/President

Wando (S.C.) boys’ lacrosse coach Lance Renes said his Warriors committed themselves to winning a state a state title the moment they came back to school in the Fall.

Wando wins South Carolina. state title with 18-0 record

Wando wins South Carolina. state title with 18-0 record

“We had a significant amount of players commit to our strength and conditioning program that started in September, and we also had multiple sport athletes,” said Renes. “The state of South Carolina allows us to have out of season practice in the fall, so we utilized every opportunity to improve in the off season.”

The extra work clearly paid off for Wando.

The Warriors completed a perfect 18-0 season Saturday, claiming the South Carolina boys’ state championship with a 13-6 win over Fort Mill at Chapin High School. The state title was Wando’s second in three years, each over Fort Mill; last year Fort Mill beat the Warriors in the final.

Senior Andrew Phelan had four goals to lead Wando and sophomore Ryan Lipsky scored three goals. The Warriors led, 8-0, and then 8-2 at halftime and was never threatened.

Back in February, Wando defeated Fort Mill, 17-5. The Warriors won all of their game against South Carolina teams by at least seven goals and also went 3-0 against teams from Georgia and Tennessee.

In an interview with Renes, he comments on their growing success and strategy going into the championship game.

Knowing you had defeated Fort Mill 17-5 back in February in the opener, what was the team’s strategy coming into the game and how did they execute it?
Renes:
“After scouting Fort Mill, we recognized they like to slow the game down with good ball control and selecting good shots on offense. To counter that our plan was to win face-offs, pressure out on defense, and get an early lead with goals in transition and attacking hard on settled offense. It was 8-0 before Fort Mill scored their first goal.”

What made your team so amazingly successful?
Renes:
“We scheduled the best teams in South Carolina and tough out of state opponents as well. To help increase motivation we implemented a goal setting program. First, we established outcome goals, such as winning our region, and then winning the state championship. Next we established performance goals based on position. For example, it was our objective to win 51% of face-offs in each game. After each game we evaluated our performance goals to recognize what aspect of the game needed to improve. By having a goal setting program, it kept us focused on the task at hand by working to achieve our objectives each game. When we need to improve on certain areas, we established process goals. For example, we did not meet our objectives for shooting at the start of the season, so the process goal to improve shooting percentages involved striving for a 75% accuracy during shooting drills at practice. We focused on cohesiveness all season. We taught and executed what it means to play team offense and defense. Our focus was task orientated, meaning that our concern was performing our best and not being the best.”

What has helped your program achieve so much success in recent years?
Renes:
“Our program has achieved success because of standards that were established in the past. Every season our team improves and the bar is set higher, so athletes realize they have to work harder than those in the past to create progress. We are also achieving success because of the positive growth in the lacrosse community. We have a great feeder program from our rec department and there are travel teams in the area that help lacrosse players improve with a goal to reach their full potential. The game of lacrosse is growing in a positive direction in the Charleston area, so players arriving to high school with good fundamentals and good lacrosse IQ.”

Anything else you wish to add?
Renes:
“Lacrosse in South Carolina was sanctioned in 2010 and since then we have won three titles. The game of lacrosse is growing in the right direction and it is our vision as a program to lead the state in the progression in skill and sportsmanship.”

The Lake Highland Prep boys’ lacrosse team will shoot for its third straight Florida state lacrosse championship and the Vero Beach girls will aim for an even 10 in a row tonight at IMG Lacrosse Academy in Bradenton.Florida State tourney

Lake Highland Prep (20-3) advanced Friday by handling Lake Mary 14-3 as Reid Thedford scored four goals and Connor Aniello added two goals and had two assists. The Highlanders – making their sixth straight appearance in the state finals – will face undefeated St. Thomas Aquinas (21-0), a 14-5 winner over St. Andrew’s, at 7:30 p.m.

St. Thomas Aquinas, which got four goals from Alex Tumminello in Friday’s rout, defeated Lake Highland Prep, 11-10 back on Feb. 13.

Meanwhile, the Vero Beach girls (19-3) scored the final six goals of the game to topple Barron Collier (22-2), 13-9 in Friday’s semis. Zan Biedenharn scored five goals and Abby Shields added four for the Fighting Indians.

Barron Collier had the lead, 9-7, but BC standout Olivia Ferrucci (four goals, three assists) was disqualified after receiving a second yellow card when the Indians had tied it, 9-9. After that, Vero Beach dominated while taking advantage of the man-up situation.

Vero’s opponent in the finals at 5 p.m. will be Ponte Vedra (19-3), which earned a rematch of last year’s final with a 20-13 victory over Olympia.

Last year Ponte Vedra fell to Vero Beach 13-6 in the title game and earlier this year the Sharks fell, 17-8, to Vero Beach.

Jade Gordon had seven goals and two assists to lead the Sharks on Friday against Olympia.

Jesuit (LA) 2015 attackman Cameron Guernsey and 2016 goalie Rob Hinyub have been named the Heritage Lacrosse Boys’ Co-Players of the Week.Heritage logo

Guernsey and Hinyub helped lead the Bluejays to their fourth straight Louisiana state championship on April 26 with a 9-3 win over St. Paul’s. Guernsey was named the State Tournament’s Most Valuable Offensive Player and had four goals and an assist in the final. Hinyub was named the tournament’s Most Valuable Defensive Player and had seven saves in the championship game.

Jesuit finished 13-2 and undefeated in in-state games. Guernsey will continue his lacrosse career next year at Roanoke. Hinyub is currently undecided.

You defeated St. Paul’s, 7-2 in your first matchup. What did they do differently this time and what did you do to counteract? And what went well?

Jesuit (New Orleans) won its fourth straight Louisiana state championship

Jesuit (New Orleans) won its fourth straight Louisiana state championship

Hinyub:
“We went into the game with the same mindset, which was to get the ball in the back of the net as soon as possible. We knew we needed to start early and execute shutdown defense.”
Guernsey: “In the last game of districts we played very well. I was out with a concussion I suffered about two weeks before so I wasn’t able to do much. This time they put their best pole on me and attempted to lock-off my linemate, Max Murret, and myself. Our team was still able to get the ball into our hands, which helped generate the offense. Our middies and younger attackers stepped up big time, which gave us a big advantage during the game. Our defense also played lights out, which was a big factor.”

What were the biggest reasons for the team’s success this year? Hinyub: “We all possessed a high level of lacrosse IQ and truly recognized who we were playing. Not only did we recognize our opponent’s strengths but we recognized ours as well which helped us in the long run. The team always gave 100% and we worked well as a team.”
Guernsey: “Coming into this year with a new coach and another state title to defend we knew we would face some challenges. St. Paul’s was a young team but they had a lot of talent and a lot of potential. We knew we had a lot of work to do, so the team gave it 100% the entire season, always trying to better ourselves and our teammates.”

How has the program continued to excel each year? Hinyub: “It all starts with the individuals. The time put in outside of practice and during the off season has truly helped. Everyone is putting in the work and showing up to practice ready to make the team better.”
Guernsey: “We’ve become a lot more disciplined over the years and we know that every team in the state is gunning for us so we can’t afford to slip, even a little bit. We come into a season with one goal every year and that’s to win state. We’re just trying to build a dynasty for years to come.”
